Workshops

Chris Gander's workshops present a musical exploration of the melodic and rhythmic elements that create the sounds and colours of many of the world's genres of music and, in many cases, the links that exist between them. As often as is practical, authentic instruments will be used, but the participants will also be encouraged to work with their own instruments so that they view them in a new light. The participants will work from simple charts and diagrams which can easily be accessed by all. The ability to listen and respond to others, whilst remaining in the players' ability range, will be strongly encouraged.

The workshops will include:

  • Examples of the beautifully intricate melodic patterns and subtle rhythmic patterns of Indian classical music.
  • The rhythmic and melodic modes of Arabic and Persian music.
  • The use of hand clap rhythm and melody from flamenco.
  • The sonorous rhythms from Latin America.

Levels

All the parameters in these musics can be approached at different levels, making the workshop available to musicians from the beginning to the experienced player. No previous knowledge of improvisation is necessary; in fact, people who have never improvised are often surprised at their own ability. The more experienced player will discover new colours and techniques. All will be encouraged to listen before responding, a balance between silence and sound will be emphasised. This type of work gives the players a chance to focus on material that is organic and holistic in its conception, often giving people a sense of well-being after attending theworkshop. This occurs both when the music is rhythmic and stimulating or slow and relaxing.
